Effective and Engaging Transactional Activities

Having clarified exactly what is meant by transactional activities and examined some of their core features (e.g. examples, script, common functional language used), we will analyse a range of pedagogical strategies which can help you teach transactional activities more effectively.

This will include linking the learning to learners’ real lives, task repetition, interaction patters, and using “semi-strangers”. We will also look at specific class activities which are both fun and effective, e.g. a blindfolded task to teach giving and understanding directions (which also builds trust and confidence), creating classroom ‘jumble sales’ to develop the ability to bargain and reach agreement, and running dictation for clarifying and confirming information.
